Lowestoft Construction Course Gives Young People Hands-On Experience

Young people in Lowestoft are gaining practical construction experience through a six-week Multi Skills Academy course delivered in partnership with Barnes Construction.

The Barnes Construction Multi Skills Academy Course is taking place at Inspire Colville House on School Road. Sponsored by the regional contractor, the programme gives young people the opportunity to explore a range of skilled trades within the construction industry.

Throughout the course, participants are introduced to painting and decorating, plastering, basic woodwork, tiling and working at heights. Alongside the practical training, they also receive support with CV writing and interview preparation, helping them build both technical skills and employability confidence.

The programme forms part of our ongoing collaboration with Barnes Construction. Together, we are working to create meaningful opportunities for young people, particularly those who are not in education, employment or training.

Barnes Construction is currently involved in two significant regeneration projects in Lowestoft — the transformation of the former Lowestoft Post Office and the Town Hall. The course reflects a shared commitment to delivering social value alongside physical development projects.

Claire Flowers, Education Manager at Lofty Heights, said: "We’re absolutely delighted to be working in partnership with Barnes Construction to offer young people in Lowestoft the opportunity to take part in our multi-skills course.

"Through this programme, participants can gain valuable qualifications, all which will help them to take those vital first steps into the construction industry."

For those taking part, the impact has already been significant.

Fergus, one of the participants, said: "The course has so far been great.

"It has put some structure and purpose into my day and I have also met some new people as part of this process."

Kallum added: "I've been struggling to find work locally, so when this opportunity to attend a course to gain more skills and qualifications including my CSCS Card presented itself locally in Lowestoft, I jumped at it.

"I'm really enjoying the practical sessions and I've met some good lads."

Through programmes like this, we continue to support young people to gain confidence, develop practical skills and take important steps towards employment in the construction industry.
